I attended the JRF AOB Meeting that is held the first third Wednesday of the new quarter at the control tower conference room.  The NEW (again) airport manager is Jeff Sawyer who came from DHS and is not a pilot.

DOTA is still working on completing an airfield survey so the JRF GPS approaches can be certified for night use.  This has been an i…[Read more]

I attended the July 17, 2019 Airport Operations Board (AOB) Meeting today.  Here is a brief summary:

Jeff Sawyer will be the new DOT Airport Manager for Kalaeloa Airport (JRF) and also Dillingham Airfield (HDH) effective July 22, 2019.  Sawyer has NO previous aviation experience.

Current Airport Manager Blalock updated the group that some p…[Read more]

Rob Moore replied to the topic Hawaii Tour Helicopter Operations in the forum Aviation Legistation 7 months ago

It appears the local helicopter group has not stepped up to talk to the local community to solve the concerns.  If they do not, I fear the legislatures will resolve the problem and not necessarily in aviation’s favor.  I asked our AOPA representative and our Hawaii Aviation Causus chair to host a meeting to discuss this.  I am hoping it happens bu…[Read more]

I agree it charges tie down renters way too much.  I have three tie downs at JRF that are in close proximity and have to pay $300 on each.  So I pay $900 a year for an assessed value of approximately $133.  I approached Council Woman Pine who ignored me.  I am ready to take more action.  I think Chapter 13 is too slow.

Did you know when considering buying a fire extinguisher for your aircraft, you should consider how you will use it and where.  There are several methods of extingushing a fire—either take away the temperature or the oxygen.  There are different types: class A, B, C, D or E.  Most GA aircraft use a multipurpose A, B, C Halogen extinguisher, whic…[Read more]

I have been asked how do you buy an aircraft.  The FAA put out several years ago a manual outlining what to consider and how you buy an aircraft.  It was called Plane Sense.  You can find the Plane Sense manual here:  https://www.faa.gov/regulations_policies/handbooks_manuals/aviation/media/faa-h-8083-19a.pdf

N66540 is a Ce-172P, 1983 Cessna Skyhawk.  A perfect airplane for up-and-coming pilots building hours or an instrument rating.  The airplane has 14862 total time and the last annual was March 2016 (the transponder and pitot/static/ELT are also overdue).  The wing interiors were treated with ACF-50.  The engine has a factory overhaul engine tha…[Read more]
